Molecular Formula: C8H11NO2 (8 carbons, 11 Hydrogen, 1 nitrogen and 2 oxygen)
Composition of substances in Molecule: Dopamine is composed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, which are all nonmetals. Physical properties:
Molecule at Room Temperature: Dopamine is a chemical that is naturally produced in the brain, therefore in its natural state it is never at room temperature since the internal temperature in the brain needs to be in the range of 37°C (body temperature) to 39°C. But since dopamine needs to chemically bond with transmitters I would say it is a liquid at 39°C, therefore at room temperature (20°C) should also be a liquid. Also dopamine can be made synthetically by reacting it with HCl to intravenously infuse into the body. The 2 substances; dopamine and HCl, are mixed in a solution of water before injection. This clearly shows that it is a liquid at room temperature. Chemical Composition of the molecule: All the elements that dopamine consists of are found in the far right of the periodic table except for hydrogen. This signifies that the molecule is mostly nonmetal hence the compound is an organic molecule. It is also produced naturally and not by man, even though it can now be synthesized. Alternative names:
